Wolf Conservation

Giving Wolves a Voice in the Landscapes They Sustain
Wolves are keystone carnivores. Their presence shapes ecosystems by regulating prey populations, strengthening biodiversity, and maintaining natural balance. When wolves thrive, entire landscapes, from forests to river valleys, grow stronger and more resilient.

Why Wolves Matter

  • Wolves help maintain healthy prey populations, preventing over browsing of forests and wetlands.
  • Their influence creates trophic cascades that support biodiversity, from beavers and birds to healthy waterways.
  • For many Indigenous Nations, wolves are cultural teachers and hold deep spiritual significance.

The Challenge

Wolves in Canada face relentless persecution:

  • Culling: Aerial gunning programs continue in Alberta and BC, despite evidence that habitat loss, not wolves, is the key driver of caribou decline.
  • Trapping & Snares: Inhumane neck snares remain legal and widely used, despite being cruel, non-selective, and out of step with science and ethics.
  • Poisoning: Toxicants like strychnine and Compound 1080 are still used, causing extreme suffering and indiscriminate deaths of wolves and non-target animals.
  • Fear & Misinformation: Persistent myths fuel intolerance and fear, undermining coexistence and science-based management.

Our Work on Wolf Conservation

We are committed to ending cruel and outdated wolf management practices:

1

Education & Coexistence | Our Wolf Knowledge Base helps people learn how to coexist with wolves, including encounter safety, livestock protection strategies, and responsible recreation.

2

Advocacy & Policy Reform | We push for wolf management grounded in science, ethics, and coexistence, not lethal control.

3

Advocacy & Policy Reform | Our campaign calls on the federal government to review the outdated Agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards (AIHTS) and ban killing neck snares. Watch our docuseries exposing modern trapping.
